History – Straight from the Barrel, this cask strength offering is made from Texas-Grown grains. The epic saga of the Aldecoa dynasty’s dominion over coffee and spirits spans across continents and generations, weaving a tapestry of resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and adaptability.
It all began amidst the roaring twenties, as Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno’s grandfather, Carlos de Aldecoa Fernandez, sowed the seeds of their familial legacy in the bustling streets of Madrid, Spain. However, the onset of the Spanish Civil War forced the family to seek refuge in the verdant landscapes of Veracruz, Mexico, where they transplanted their enterprise, nurturing it amidst the chaos of conflict and displacement.
In the 1930s, the Aldecoa lineage took root in Mexico, expanding their ventures to include coffee plantations, roasting facilities, and venturing into the intricate art of decaffeination. Carlos de Aldecoa Pereda, the patriarch’s son, was born into this world of coffee, inheriting not just a name but also a passion for the trade.
By 1963, Carlos de Aldecoa Pereda had assumed the helm of the family business, steering its growth and diversification. Recognizing the need for expansion, he guided the company to new horizons, extending its reach across Mexico.
However, in 1985, the winds of change blew once more as the demands of expansion prompted Carlos de Aldecoa Pereda to relocate the family enterprise to the vibrant city of Houston, Texas. There, amidst the Texan spirit of entrepreneurship, the Aldecoa family planted new roots.
In 1997, Carlos de Aldecoa Pereda partnered with his son, Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno, to establish Eximius Coffee LLC in Houston, becoming the sales arm for their growing coffee empire. Soon after, fresh from his studies at the University of Houston, Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno and his family revived a dormant rice manufacturing plant, christening it CADECO Industries.
The dawn of the new millennium witnessed the Aldecoa family’s ambitions soar to greater heights. In 2009, they introduced Café Diario, catering to the discerning palates of the Texan coffee aficionados.
However, it was in 2014 that the Aldecoa family embarked on their boldest venture yet. Inspired by a desire to expand their offerings, Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno, now known as “The Coffee King,” ventured into the world of distilled spirits. Thus, Buffalo Bayou Distilleries was born, heralding a new chapter in the family saga.
Over the years, the distillery flourished under Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno’s meticulous guidance, evolving into Gulf Coast Distillers, renowned for its excellence and craftsmanship. By 2019, the distillery welcomed the public, inviting them to experience the artistry behind their libations.
The year 2020 brought unforeseen challenges with the global pandemic. Yet, true to their resilient nature, Gulf Coast Distillers pivoted to produce hand sanitizer, providing a beacon of hope in troubled times.
As time progressed, Gulf Coast Distillers continued to innovate and grow, culminating in their rebranding as Giant Texas Distillers in 2022. Today, under the leadership of Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno, the family’s legacy endures, a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in the worlds of coffee and spirits.
