History – Hard Truth Distilling Co., founded in 2015 in Nashville, Indiana, emerged as an extension of the successful Big Woods Restaurant Group. Created by Jeff McCabe, Jim Dunbar, and Tim Obert, the distillery aimed to craft premium spirits reflecting the bold essence of southern Indiana. Nestled on a 325-acre wooded campus in scenic Brown County, the state-of-the-art distillery opened in 2018, offering an immersive experience that blends craft spirits, natural beauty, and hospitality. This location has become a destination for tourists, combining outdoor adventure with a passion for finely made spirits.

The distillery is known for its diverse product lineup, including Brown County Spiced Rum, small-batch whiskey, gin, and vodka. Their innovative approach to flavored spirits, such as toasted coconut rum and maple-bourbon cream, has helped set them apart in the craft distilling market. Hard Truth emphasizes small-batch production and creative techniques, using local ingredients and experimenting with unique mash bills and barrel finishes to produce intricate, high-quality flavors. Their dedication to craftsmanship has garnered them national recognition and several awards.

Guests can take guided tours of the distillery, enjoy tastings in their expansive visitor center, and explore hiking trails on the beautiful campus. Live events and outdoor seating create a vibrant community atmosphere, making Hard Truth a central hub for locals and tourists alike. The distillery is also committed to sustainability, responsible drinking, and supporting local agriculture, further solidifying its role as a vital part of the Brown County community.

As Hard Truth continues to expand its distribution across the U.S., it remains focused on its core values of quality, authenticity, and innovation. With plans to explore new spirit varieties and push the boundaries of flavor, the distillery is poised to remain a leader in the craft distilling movement. By blending tradition with bold creativity, Hard Truth Distilling Co. stands out as a testament to the growing sophistication of Indiana’s craft beverage industry.

Value – This is an average price for this product.

Appearance – I’m absolutely in love with this bottle—from its elegant, vintage-inspired cork topper to its sleek and stylish silhouette, it radiates charm. It’s the kind of design that effortlessly elevates any shelf. The branding is impeccable, with every detail showcasing exceptional thought and craftsmanship.

Nose – Not much on the nose but does have some light Honey, Sweet Corn, and Red Velvet Cake.

Palate – Thick Mouthfeel, Apple, Pie Crust and Smoke.

Finish – Not very smooth but rather a little harsh. It brings you notes of Grape Hard Candies but also gives you a Charcoal flavor.

Summary – Hard Truth Distilling Co. has crafted a product that reflects its commitment to bold craftsmanship and attention to detail. While the value falls within an average price range, the bottle’s stunning design—featuring a vintage-inspired cork topper and sleek silhouette—exudes charm and sophistication, making it a standout addition to any collection. The branding is expertly executed, adding to its overall appeal.

On the nose, it offers subtle hints of honey, sweet corn, and a touch of red velvet cake, creating a light and approachable aroma. The palate delivers a thick mouthfeel with flavors of apple, pie crust, and a smoky undertone, striking a balance between warmth and depth. The finish is a bit on the harsher side, leaving behind notes of grape hard candies mingled with a distinct charcoal character.

“While it may not appeal to everyone’s palate, its design and bold flavor profile make it a noteworthy entry in the world of craft distilling.”
