History – Hard Truth Distilling Co. has reached a significant milestone with the introduction of its latest venture, the Sweet Mash Rye release, marking a bold new chapter in the distillery’s expansion journey. The completion of Rackhouse No. 2, which doubles the storage capacity from 4,000 to an impressive 12,000 barrels, underscores the scale of this endeavor.

Famed for its exceptional rye whiskies, Hard Truth has earned widespread praise and recognition. The debut of Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey secured a coveted position in Fred Minnick’s prestigious Top 50 American Whiskeys of 2021, followed by a gold medal at the USA Spirits Awards, a double platinum at the ASCOTs, and two impressive 93 ratings in various tasting competitions. Notably, the Master Distiller’s Reserve Malted Rye Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey clinched the esteemed 2023 Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Established in 2015 and headquartered in Nashville, Indiana, Hard Truth Distilling Co. has curated a diverse portfolio of over 20 premium spirits, including the acclaimed Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey, alongside popular selections like Hard Truth Cinnamon Vodka, Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum, and Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum Cream.

Hard Truth’s spirits are enjoyed across numerous states, stretching from Arkansas to Wyoming, with plans for expansion into additional territories in 2023.

The journey began when Hard Truth quickly outgrew its original production facility in 2015. By 2017, construction was underway for its current state-of-the-art distillery, housed in a spacious 50,000-square-foot building featuring a cutting-edge Vendome Copper & Brass distilling system. Situated within Brown County, Indiana’s sprawling 325-acre wooded landscape—a haven for artists and a hotspot for tourists boasting Indiana’s largest state park—Hard Truth’s destination campus epitomizes innovation and artisanal craftsmanship. Let’s dig in!

Value – The value on this is pretty high for what it is. While understanding this is a small batch barrel proof I feel that it could have been a little lower.

Appearance – I love love love this bottle with its old school fancy cork topper to its shape. I think it looks super cool on the shelf. The branding they went through you can tell is very professional.

Nose – Mint / Black Pepper / Nutmeg / Apple

Palate – Pecan Wood / Piney / Super Complex / Very Sweet with Marshmallow

Finish – The finish is on point with notes of caramel, toffee and gingerbread pulling in so many other flavors as well. This goes beyond the approach for what I expected in this bottle.

Summary – In conclusion, Hard Truth Distilling Co. has soared to new heights with the unveiling of its Sweet Mash Rye release, marking a significant milestone in its expansion journey. The completion of Rackhouse No. 2, tripling the storage capacity, showcases the scale of this ambitious endeavor. Renowned for its exceptional rye whiskies, Hard Truth continues to garner acclaim, with Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey securing prestigious accolades and ratings, including a coveted position in Fred Minnick’s Top 50 American Whiskeys of 2021. The Master Distiller’s Reserve Malted Rye Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey further solidified its status with a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2023.
