History – J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery, founded by Jeff Mattingly, a descendant of Kentucky distilling pioneer John Graves Mattingly, is honored military veterans this past Memorial Day weekend with a commemorative bourbon release in remembrance of the Mogadishu Mile. The Battle of Mogadishu, one of the bloodiest battles faced by U.S. soldiers since Vietnam, resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers during the conflict, with a 19th soldier tragically killed in a mortar attack two days later. In tribute, J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery released Mogadishu Mile Bourbon, a special limited-edition blend crafted from 19 barrels. Only 500 bottles were available for purchase, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Kentucky Wounded Heroes, a nonprofit organization supporting injured military personnel and first responders.
A special event was held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The event featured a food truck, local beer, veteran-owned vendors, and cocktails for purchase. In addition, attendees who purchased a cocktail received a complimentary commemorative glassware etched with the word “Veteran” and the American flag. This release marks the fourth consecutive year that J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery has partnered with Kentucky Wounded Heroes to support their mission through the sale of Mogadishu Mile Bourbon.
The significance of the 19 soldiers who lost their lives during the battle is deeply reflected in the creation of this special bourbon. During the blending process, it was noted by a member of Kentucky Wounded Heroes that 19 barrels had been pulled for consideration. This connection inspired the blending team to craft this year’s release using all 19 barrels, resulting in a unique and meaningful blend. Mogadishu Mile Bourbon is aged for 6.5 years and bottled at 115 proof, with tasting notes that include sweet and gently smoky oak, chocolate, citrus, and baking spices. Each 750 mL bottle is priced at $120, with $20 from every sale going to Kentucky Wounded Heroes.
J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery carries forward the long legacy of the Mattingly family in Kentucky distilling, a tradition that began in 1845 with John Graves Mattingly’s first distillery in Marion County, Kentucky. Jeff Mattingly, who launched the distillery in 2010, now leads the business alongside his son Cameron, the Vice President of Production. Together, they continue to innovate with their proprietary double staving process and offer a custom bourbon blending experience at their Frankfort location and online.
Appearance – The appearance leaves you breathless as it is a site to see. It tells the story of the battle on the back of the bottle.

Nose – The nose is wonderfully loaded with Cinnamon, All Spice and Citrus. It’s not overpowering for a 115 proof and is very soft with an added amount of traditional Smoked Oak.
Palate – Very thick in the palate with lots of Custard, Butterscotch and Fudge landing hard on the tongue. It stays coated just giving you a full load of the sweetness it brings to the table.
Finish – An oily finish with a cooling of 7-10 seconds popping with the same fudge flavor profile that the palate offers. It also gives you Pepper and Mint which you would not expect.
Value – The value is in line for what they are offering in this bottle and with this being a collectors bottle at that.
Summary – Overall, Mogadishu Mile Bourbon is more than just a bottle of whiskey—it’s a tribute to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of American soldiers. From its carefully crafted blend of 19 barrels to its thoughtful commemorative design, this limited edition release from J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery embodies both quality and meaning. Whether you’re a collector or simply appreciate a well-made bourbon, Mogadishu Mile is a fitting tribute that honors the past while delivering a memorable drinking experience.
“What a great company showing its love for Military Veterans through commemorating in peoples houses those 19 soldiers that will live forever in history.”
