In the heart of Decatur, Georgia, a revolution in craft spirits began in 2014 with the inception of Independent Distilling Company. Founders Michael Anderson and Casey Teague embarked on a mission to not only produce small-batch, handcrafted spirits but to weave a narrative deeply rooted in the rich heritage of southern distillation. Their vision, fueled by a passion for their home state and a commitment to quality, laid the foundation for a journey that would redefine craft distillation in Georgia.
Michael Anderson, a native of Kennesaw, Georgia, brought with him a wealth of expertise in distillation and a profound connection to the local community. Raised amidst Georgia’s picturesque landscapes, Anderson’s upbringing instilled in him a reverence for the land and its bounty, driving his desire to create spirits that authentically captured the essence of the region.

Casey Teague, a Smyrna native with a background in journalism and literature, understood the power of storytelling in evoking emotion and forging connections. This storytelling ethos became the cornerstone of Independent Distilling Company’s brand identity, permeating everything from product labels to marketing campaigns.
Together, Anderson and Teague embarked on a journey guided by a shared commitment to excellence, authenticity, and innovation. Armed with a 100-gallon Copper Pot Still and an unwavering passion, they set out to create a lineup of spirits that showcased Georgia’s finest grains while honoring its distilling traditions.
Their flagship product, Hellbender Corn Whiskey, emerged as a symbol of this commitment. Crafted from locally sourced corn and distilled using a grain-up process, it revived a southern tradition overlooked by mainstream producers. Each bottle captured the essence of the region’s terroir, reflecting Anderson and Teague’s dedication to preserving and celebrating Georgia’s heritage.
Buoyed by the success of Hellbender, Independent Distilling Company expanded its portfolio to include a range of spirits, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail. From Independent Rum, made from table-grade molasses, to Hellbender Bourbon, the first of its kind produced within Atlanta since Prohibition, every spirit bore the stamp of Anderson and Teague’s craftsmanship.
As the distillery grew, Anderson and Teague remained committed to their founding principles. Their backgrounds in journalism and literature infused every aspect of the brand with narrative depth and authenticity, inviting consumers to become part of the story behind the spirits.
Looking ahead, Anderson and Teague were poised to lead Independent Distilling Company into its next chapter. With a blend of innovation and tradition, they aimed to push the boundaries of craft distillation, creating spirits that would captivate enthusiasts worldwide. Rooted in their shared vision, they were confident that Independent Distilling Company would continue to shine as a beacon of excellence in the craft spirits landscape for years to come.
